Admissions: Reception to Year 6

Thank you very much for your interest in joining our school.

We hold 'Open Mornings' each autumn term for parents considering our school for Reception or Year 3 places for the following September (we are often also joined by parents looking to move their children to our school at other points in their primary school years). This is the perfect time to  find out first hand about our school and  talk to staff and pupils.

Throughout the rest of the year, we will generally only hold 'tours' of the school for families who are offered in-year places in one of our classes. This is because tours are time consuming and as we have waiting lists in most of our year groups, many families will already have joined another school by the time a place becomes available.

Surrey County Council is the admission authority for this school and also manage the appeals process.  To find up to date information about the school's admission arrangements and details on how to apply, either as part of the normal Reception or Junior (Y3) intake or during the school year, please use this link:

Detailed information about our school's admissions and allocation of places in recent years can be found here.  A copy of the current admissions criteria can be found at the bottom of this page. Surrey CC have also produced a booklet called 'Get ready for school', which contains lots of useful information about the process of starting school.

In the meantime, you may also find it useful to find out about our inspection reports, recent school performance data, read our prospectus and hear what we get up to from day to day at The Royal Kent School! There is plenty of other information available on this website which will help you to decide if it it the right school for your child. If there is any further information which you would like to know, please do not hesitate to contact our school office with your query.

Open morning dates for September 2024 entry:

10th October 2023 at 9.30am

14th November 2023 at 9.30am

Click here to sign up for a place or request a copy of the presentation, if you cannot attend in person.

Admissions for Year 3 entry (for September entry)

We take two additional pupils in to our Year 3 class each September, as our capacity in Key Stage 2 is slightly higher than in Key Stage 1. There also may be vacancies created by any children who leave the school at the end of Year 2. If you are interested in applying for one of these places for your child, please join us for one of our Open Mornings, and let us know that the year group you are interested in is Year 3. Again, all admissions for Year 3 entry is handled by Surrey CC.

Admissions for Reception entry (for September entry)

If you are interested in your child joining our Reception class for the next school year, you can join us during one of our Open Mornings in the autumn term. Please contact the school office if you wish to book a space on one of these mornings.

In-year admissions (at any time)

If you are looking to move a child in any other year group to our school, it is a good idea to contact our School Office; we can tell you if there is a vacancy in the year group that you are interested in. If the year group that you wish to join does not have a current space, you can join the waiting list (again, this is entirely managed by Surrey CC).

Admission criteria for community and voluntary controlled schools in Surrey

The admission criteria for the majority of Surrey’s community and voluntary controlled schools, including The Royal Kent School, are set out below:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after children
  2. Exceptional social/medical need
  3. Children of permanent members of staff where the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made; and/or the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage
  4. Children who will have a sibling at the school or at an infant/junior school which operates shared sibling priority, at the time of the child’s admission
  5. Children for whom the school is the nearest to their home address as measured by straight line - the nearest school will be the school closest to the home address that has a Published Admission Number to admit pupils of the appropriate age range and which admits local children. The nearest school may be either inside or outside the county boundary.
  6. Any other children prioritised according to the distance they live from the school.

Unless otherwise stated, distance will be used when any category is oversubscribed and will be measured by straight line from the address point of the pupil’s home to the nearest official school
gate for pupils to use. Where two or more children share priority for a place, Surrey County Council will use random allocation to determine which child should be given priority.

Further information on the determined admission arrangements for the upcoming academic year can be found here.
